Editors must examine structure; check style and tone; ensure that copy is reader-friendly and watch out for inconsistencies, contradictions and repetitions.

Accuracy is part of your editorial job. If something feels incomplete, as if it doesn't add up, or seems wrong, check it.
And if you're not sure, ask a colleague or fellow writer to read the work with you. There is nothing wrong with a second opinion. They'll be able to tell you if there are any glaring gaps.

• spelling
• punctuation
• syntax
• grammar
