Evening workshop for scriptwriters

The Writing Studio re-launches its Tuesday evening Basic Workshop for Scriptwriters in March for aspirant screenwriters who would like to write for a visual medium and explore the world of filmmaking.

The Basic Workshop for Scriptwriters will take place at the Artscape Theatre Centre on March 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 from 17h30 until 20h30.

In addition to the evening classes, the writers will also attend an exclusive preview of Martin Scorcese's Shutter Island and are invited to a question and answer session with producer Genevieve Hofmeyer and writer-director Henk Pretorius.

Producer Genevieve Hofmeyr (Moonlighting Films), who most recently co-produced Skin and was the supervising producer on Invictus and Amelia, and writer-director Henk Pretorius, who is currently working on the post-production of the sequel Bakgat, will shed light on what it takes to be a screenwriter in South Africa.

Aspirant scribes will learn the fundamentals of building and telling a compelling story, and how to effectively dramatise ideas, characters and plot.

The Basic Workshop for filmmakers explores the journey from the inspiration of an idea, through the writing process to the planning and start of a first draft of a screenplay that will become the blueprint for a film or television series. Within 5 days writers will understand the principles of writing for a visual medium and what it takes to be screenwriter in South Africa.

The workshop is also an introduction into the world of filmmaking and teaches writers how to read and interpret the fascinating language of film, and how to evaluate and analyse film, television constructively.

The cost of the workshop is R900 with a discounted rate of R800 for students, scholars and pensioners, Bursaries are allocated on discretion to unemployed and disadvantaged writers.
