Writing for the media I: General

From 4 to 5 March 2010, the Stellenbosch University Language Centre will be presenting a workshop for those who regularly have to liaise with the media and are required to write media releases.

This two-day workshop is also aimed at persons who have to fulfil public relations duties without having had the necessary training. We aim to assist participants to:
•plan their communication successfully;
•understand the functioning and demands of the media;
•develop the skills to identify newsworthy topics; and
•write an effective media release that will capture the attention of newspapers, the radio as well as television.

Dawid Botha, an independent communications consultant, will be presenting the workshop for the eighth time. He is a former lecturer in Public Relations Management, and was also the head of corporate communication at a training institution. Participants are invited to send one of their own media releases with their registration form to be discussed as sample material during the workshop.

This interactive workshop can accommodate only 20 participants, and entries close on 23 February 2010. Although the workshop will be presented in English, but we follow a language-friendly approach regarding the use of English and Afrikaans. Visit the Stellenbosch University Language Centre's website (www.sun.ac.za/taalsentrum) for full details and a registration form, or contact Audrey Poole as soon as possible on 021 808 2167 or .

Please note: This workshop will be complemented by two more focused workshops later in the year, namely Writing for the Media II: Media releases (May 2010) and Writing for the Media III: Feature articles (October 2010).
