Four electric vehicles have been delivered to Shamwari Game Reserve as part of a project that aims to lower carbon emissions. Four more will be delivered at a later date.
The vehicles come from the uYilo Technology E-Mobility Innovation Programme at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.
"The long-term goal is to deploy electric vehicles on game reserves around the country and, with the help of the UN Development Organisation, develop a sustainable low-carbon emission transport system for various projects," said Dirk Odendaal, director of uYilo.
Shamwari welcomed the reduction in fuel costs going forward, Shamwari GM Joe Cloete said.
An electric all-terrain vehicle will be used for rhino anti-poaching efforts.
A dedicated carport housing a solar array will provide a renewable source of energy.for charging of the vehicles.
