SA May retail trade sales up 2.4% y/y vs April 2.1% y/y

Retail trade sales measured in constant (2012) prices increased by a much better than expected 2.4% year on year (y/y) in May after increasing a revised 2.1% (1.8%) y/y in April‚ Statistics SA figures showed yesterday.

Retail trade sales were expected to have increased by 0.7% y/y according to a median consensus forecast from a survey of eleven economists by BDPro.

Forecasts among the economists polled ranged from -2.3% to 1.4%.

Measured in real terms‚ seasonally adjusted retail trade sales rose by 0.8% month on month in May following month-on-month changes of 0.4% in April and -1.1% in March.

Seasonally adjusted retail trade sales fell by 0.8% in the three months ended May 2014 compared with the previous three months.
