The volume of goods transported (payload) increased by 3.8% in July this year compared with July last year‚ data from Statistics SA on released on Wednesday (25 September) showed.
The corresponding income increased by 11.2% over the same period.
Income from freight transportation increased by 10.5% in the three months ended July compared with the three months ended July last year.
The main contributors to this increase were "other" freight (30.5% and contributing 2.8 percentage points)‚ primary mining and quarrying products (7.7% and contributing 2.5 percentage points); and containers (16.5% and contributing 1.1 percentage points).
Stats SA also noted that the number of passenger journeys remained stable between July last year and July this year‚ while the income increased by 10.2% over the same period.
