SA 'has head in the sand'

A French businessman whose Oyster Bay plot in the Eastern Cape has been engulfed by a giant sand dune has cut ties with South Africa, claiming he would rather spend his holidays elsewhere.

Thierry Chamoux is also refusing to pay rates and taxes. "All investments I wanted to do in South Africa have been cancelled," he said.

Environmental legislation has prevented residents in the area from pushing back the dunes encroaching on their homes.

Four years ago the town lost four houses after the government refused to allow residents to bulldoze a sand dune blocking a river. The houses collapsed into the river when it burst its banks.

This week Kouga municipality said it had been granted permission by the provincial department of economic development to remove the encroaching dune from public and private properties.
