Freight transport income rises 11.2% y/y

Freight transportation in this case excludes renting of trucks without drivers and in-house transportation.

The volume of goods transported increased by 3.8% in February y/y, while income from freight transportation for the three months ended February increased by 5.6% compared with the three months ended February 2010.

The 5.6% increase in income was driven mainly by primary mining and quarrying products, up 17.4% and contributing 5.2 percentage points.

Stats SA reported that income from passenger transportation increased by R648 million or 10.8% y/y in February.

Passenger transportation in this survey excluded minibus taxis, the Gautrain, metropolitan buses including the Bus Rapid System (brT) and the rental of private cars or buses.

Income from passenger transportation for the three months ended February increased by 14.5% compared with the three months ended February 2010.

The number of passengers for February decreased by 15.6% y/y.

The main contributor to the 14.5% increase was road passenger transportation, which contributed 16.1 percentage points.

This increase was counteracted by a decrease in railway passenger transportation, with a -1.6 percentage point contribution.
