Leading Social Entrepreneurship Course

Markets and Movements - The Next Chapter

Social entrepreneurship is heading into a new era, with social entrepreneurs, funders, and policymakers looking at scale and impact in new ways, focusing efforts beyond technical fixes and seeking to transform sectors, systems and societies at large.

Leading Social Entrepreneurship is a new short course at UCT's GSB that gives leaders of social enterprises exposure to the most recent developments in the field, providing them with the tools and frameworks to take their social enterprises to the next level. Convened by the Bertha Centre for Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship, this course will also promote local and global networking amongst senior-level participants and leading speakers, providing a unique community of practice that will serve participants far beyond the duration of the course.

The field of social entrepreneurship is experiencing a dramatic shift, grappling with the challenge of responding to large-scale, systemic issues. This course is designed to go beyond the current thinking in the social and civil society sectors, challenging and promoting new ways of framing the debate between impact and scale.

In this course, nonprofit leaders and those operating in the social enterprise space will be given tools to strategically grow the impact of their organisations and businesses, while also exploring models to positively influence the systems within which they operate.

This course will also look at leadership and management principles, which can assist in efficiently evolving organisations, while considering the unique challenges that social enterprises and nonprofits face. The course will feature a series of case studies highlighting leading social entrepreneurs from around the globe who are engaged in scaling impact and shifting systems for social change.

Workshops will be led by a diverse group of faculty and experts in their field. Ultimately, the course will allow participants to build a practical toolkit that will immediately be applicable once they return home to run their organisations.
