IIJ/IAJ Summer Academy: Freedom and Responsibility

Call for applications. The Institute for the Advancement of Journalism (IAJ), South Africa's premier provider of short courses and residency programmes for journalists, communicators and media practitioners, and the International Institute for Journalism (IIJ) of GIZ - Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit - based in Berlin, Germany invite young journalists to apply for a two-week training course on:
Freedom and responsibility in the media: towards sustainable quality journalism in the SADC region to be held at the IAJ in Johannesburg from November 19-30, 2012.

The programme addresses young journalists from newspapers, news agencies, online media and radio stations in the SADC region. The course will be conducted in English at the IAJ's campus, Johannesburg, South Africa.

The course aims at promoting media freedom and journalistic ethics and thus enhance the quality of journalism in media houses in the SADC region. 15 participants will be admitted. They should have at least two years of professional experience on the job.

In order to apply, applicants are requested to complete the information sheet (to be downloaded from the website: www.iaj.org.za) and submit it to the address listed below together with the following documents:

• a motivation letter, explaining what the applicant and their respective media houses hope to get out of the programme and how he/she will apply the skills learned;
• a detailed CV with clear contact details; and
• a letter of support from the applicant's employer, with clear contact details, committing the applicant to participate for the full duration of the course.

The international travel costs to and from the training venue will be borne by the IIJ in the event that the publishing houses are not able to cover the costs. In addition, accommodation costs as well as daily allowances to cover meals will be borne by the organisers.
