Last month 1232 people died nationally in just over 1000 accidents, spokesman Ashref Ismail said.

A total of 179 131 vehicles were stopped in roadblocks between 26-31 December. In December 2010, 1365 people were killed.

"Reports received from traffic monitors around the country suggest greater compliance from most motorists," he said.

"Traffic authorities will deal harshly with those who are a source of danger to themselves and others."

More figures were due to be released soon.
