Medical negligence law

Law@work, UCT Faculty of Law, is pleased to present a one-day course on medical negligence law - 3 October 2016.

About the course
Medical negligence law is a specialised and unique branch of the law which governs the rights, duties and legal basis pertaining to the doctor-patient-hospital relationship (also in context of health care users and health care providers).

This one-day course is an overview of medical negligence law in South Africa with specific reference to principles, pleadings and precedents in context of litigation. Informed consent, as a ground of justification, will also be assessed.

Who should attend this course?
Lawyers, legal advisors and advocates interested in, or involved with, dealing with or advising clients on medico-legal matters (e.g. medical negligence claims) as well as legal academics, prosecutors, magistrates and officials from the Department of Justice who would deal with these claims in court, insurers dealing with professional liability insurance, and hospital administrators.

Course presenter
Adv. Patrick van den Heever is a member of the Cape Bar and is a professor of law in the Department of Criminal and Medical law at the University of the Free State. He authored The Application of the Doctrine of a loss of a chance to recover in Medical Law-(2007): Objections in Civil Litigation (2010) and co-authored Res Ipsa Loquitur and Medical Negligence (2011).

Award of certificate:
A certificate of attendance from UCT will be issued to those who attend the full day. Please ensure that you sign the attendance register.
