South African Cultural Observatory Conference

The South African Cultural Observatory invites arts and culture practitioners, academics, professionals, researchers and all those associated with the cultural and creative Industries in South Africa to attend its first national conference taking place at the Boardwalk International Convention Centre (Port Elizabeth) on 16 and 17 May 2016.

Through presentation of past and present research, policy analysis and lived experience, the conference aims to facilitate forward-looking discussions around current and emerging networks of interest and research in the creative and cultural domains. It also aims to provide a space where researchers, policy makers and industry players can connect and enter into a meaningful dialogue.

The conference seeks to bring together arts and culture scholars, practitioners and managers, cultural attaches, statisticians, festival and event organisers, relevant state agencies, private sector firms, civil society and individuals active within the cultural and creative sectors.

Speakers will include local and international academics; industry professionals and practitioners; public managers and intellectuals; private sponsors and practitioners and supporters of the cultural and creative Industries; and organisers of cultural festivals and events.

About the South African Cultural Observatory:

The South African Cultural Observatory, recently formed and mandated by the South African Department of Arts and Culture (DAC), is a national research centre hosted by a grouping of universities comprising of Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, Rhodes University and University of Fort Hare. Its head office is based in the new Donkin Precinct in the creative heart of Port Elizabeth.

The SA Cultural Observatory develops and supports the collection and analysis of data, influences policy, shares insight and builds on the intellectual capacity gained across the arts, culture and heritage sector. It works across the breadth of all cultural domains, including the arts, heritage, tourism, museums, libraries, archives and creative industries.

The Cultural Observatory is a long-awaited and vital initiative in the country's cultural landscape. The evidence and data collected and analysed will assist in assessing where the competiveness, job creating and income generating potential of the creative industries lies.
