L'Ormarins wine estate, one of the oldest and most prominent in South Africa, sponsored the event in conjunction with Jameson's Gold Special Reserve whiskey. Elegantly branded bars and marquees were erected just shy of the race course finish line, creating an indulgent entertainment arena for celebrities and socialites.
As official bar services supplier to the celebration, Barcode took responsibility for the construction of six bar areas in separate marquees and lounges. For VIP guests, activity centred on a 24 metre square bar situated in the Jameson's Gold Special Reserve VIP tent along the side rail of the track, affording punters front row views of the racing action. Barcode's striking 22 metre circular bar and famed fish tank display formed the centerpiece of the main entertainment marquee - an extravagant venue for performances by Gold Fish, Arno Carstens, Louise Carver, Shaun Duvet and Gareth Cliff.
So, in the hands of cutting-edge event organisers Kreate, what was already a sophisticated soirée became a party as memorable as the Queen's Plate itself.
Based on previous years' attendance figures, Kreate and Barcode had prepared for the busy task of serving an estimated 2000 guests. When an unprecedented 4500 thirsty people arrived for the event, the real value of Barcode's substantial large-scale event experience came to the fore. Working with an understanding that comes from eight years in the local industry, Barcode managers and staff co-ordinated a smooth response to the relentless flow of guests to the bar. As well-trained bartenders prepared unique cocktails from a menu designed by Barcode's top mixologist and South African Classic Cocktail Champion, Ryan Duvenage, senior partner Clyde Barendse and regional manager for the Cape, George van der Schyff, ensured that Barcode's reputation for efficiency and professionalism was not compromised.
By the end of the day this combination of planning, experience and expertise had contributed significantly to the enormous success of the 2009 L'Ormarins Queen's Plate. It was a well-run production, and the first of what looks set to be a busy year for the company's new Cape Town branch.
