With more bar, more staff and more services than ever before, the Barcode team not only matched expectations, but exceeded them altogether.
Working as the exclusive bar services supplier to VIP and hospitality areas, Barcode broke all previous records – 140 Barcode staff worked behind 96 metres of bar situated in 15 exclusive marquee areas ranging in capacity from 30 people to 1500. But even though 5000 guests were served by a Barcode bartender or waitron over the weekend, the emphasis was always on personal quality rather than overall quantity.
Situated above the pit lane, platinum and gold VIP guests were greeted each morning by a choice of invigorating smoothies designed to beat the notorious Durban humidity. For those who could handle the heat, fresh coffee was also available from the dedicated barista at the Barcode bar. As the day moved on and the event shifted into top gear, guests experimented with the range of original cocktails offered on the unique Barcode A1 menu.
A1 GP is a truly international event on an international scale with meticulous organisation required to make it a success. With the experience of previous large scale events, including the 2006 A1 GP, Barcode understood what was required in terms of efficient planning and implementation. This allowed the time and space to focus on service rather than structures. As a result, guests in marquees hosted by A1 GP, MTN, ABSA, Mvelaphanda, SABC, Circa and others received a consistently high level of attention from a hand-selected crew of experienced Barcode staff.
Once again, the Durban leg of the 12 race A1 GP circuit proved enormously successful with public enthusiasm for the colourful spectacle riding higher than ever. Although South Africa's car “Vulindlela” suffered misfortune in Sunday's main race, the event itself was celebrated. South African seat holder Tokyo Sexwale said hosting an event of such magnitude showed that the country was capable of producing world-class events. The team at Barcode couldn't agree more.
