There will be accommodation in East London for the January 2011 intake of interns and community service doctors, the provincial health department said on Friday (10 December 2010). Spokesman Sizwe Kupelo was reacting to what he said were "panicking parents" who feared that their children would have nowhere to stay.
Kupelo said three blocks of flats belonging to the provincial government were being renovated, and the department had called for tenders to accommodate the 149 doctors and other health workers in the private sector.
Those tenders were being adjudicated at the moment, but landlords were phoning parents in a bid to pressure the department into rushed decision-making.
"The tenders will be awarded before the end of the month, so that by January when they have to start there is no problem," he said. "There will be accommodation."
