The rehabilitation programme, which began in August 2025, was originally budgeted at R276m and scheduled for completion in late 2026. However, additional work to address underlying road surface issues has added R35m to the project and extended the completion date to March 2027.

Project scope expands

The rehabilitation works include:

• Rehabilitation of the base layer in the slow lanes in both directions.
• Surface repairs at the Stormvoël and Zambezi interchanges, plus targeted improvements at the Proefplaas Interchange.
• A full asphalt overlay across both the slow and fast lanes in both directions.
• Replacement of outdated road signage and repairs to concrete-lined drainage systems.

Work is being carried out during both daytime and nighttime shifts, with temporary lane closures in both directions.

Night work limits disruption

To date, more than 22,000 tonnes of asphalt have been laid during night shifts between 7pm and 6am.

From mid-July, asphalt overlay works will begin, requiring temporary lane closures on certain interchange ramps, including Proefplaas.

Bakwena said it has implemented traffic management measures to maintain safety and minimise delays, with most repair work scheduled for night shifts to reduce disruption during peak travel periods.

Improving a key transport corridor

Once complete, the project is expected to improve road safety, travel reliability and freight efficiency along the corridor.

According to Bakwena, the rehabilitation programme will also strengthen regional trade links, create local employment opportunities, and support small-business participation through local supplier involvement.

Motorists are encouraged to monitor Bakwena's official X account for updates on lane closures, traffic arrangements and alternative routes during construction.
