Volume of goods transported by land up 4.2% y/y in August

The volume of goods transported by road and rail increased 4.2% in August compared with a year earlier‚ according to Statistics SA data.

Income from the transport of goods rose 10.2% over the same period.

Income from freight transport was up 9.5% in the three months to August compared with a year earlier.

The main contributors to this increase were primary mining and quarrying products (9.8% and contributing 3.2 percentage points); and 'other' freight (31.7% and contributing 2.8 percentage points).

The number of passenger journeys increased by 0.2% in August year on year. The corresponding income increased by 7.1% over the same period‚ the data showed.
