UK to give more funds to SA students

The United Kingdom announced an increase in funding allocated to its Chevening scholarship programme in South Africa, as well as a new scholarship on Tuesday (13 November).

"I am delighted to announce additional funding for the UK's Chevening Scholarship Programme in South Africa," UK Minister for Africa Mark Simmonds said in Johannesburg.

Under a new partnership with education funder Canon Collins Trust, the government would co-fund six scholarships.

"This, and other planned increases in the funding we provide for Chevening in South Africa, will mean an uplift of over 25% in the number of scholarships available to young South Africans."

A new Bloodhound scholarship had also been created.

It would be administered by Chevening and would focus on the science, technology, engineering and mathematics sectors.
