Breadline Africa launches Cape Flats soup kitchen

The Macedonian Feeding Scheme opens its kitchen on a biweekly basis to provide nutritious meals for more than 385 impoverished and unemployed youth, homeless people, the elderly and school children in the Cape Flats and surrounds.

Breadline Africa's projects officer Edna Titus said, "The Macedonian Feeding Scheme brings much needed care and support to the community. A food preparation area was a basic need that Breadline Africa identified when we began working with this organisation. Today, we are thrilled to be donating a converted kitchen container to this project, giving volunteers a hygienic venue to prepare meals for vulnerable members of the community."

Breadline Africa, a Cape Town based NGO, is one of the biggest suppliers of converted containers for poverty relief in Southern Africa. Since 1993, the organisation has provided over 250 containers to resource-poor communities. The containers, which are sturdy and watertight, are transformed into mobile structures, which are used as educare centres, libraries, soup kitchens and ablution facilities.

"The containers are a lifeline for many struggling communities, they provide instant and vital infrastructure," Titus said. "Our projects try to establish a level of self-sustainability within the community."

At the handover ceremony, Ola's Paddle Pop delivered ice creams to the project. Paddle Pop ended its "week of joy" campaign in the Western Cape as it delivered 53,800 Paddle Pops to hospitals, orphanages and charities in and around Cape Town.

To celebrate the opening of the soup kitchen at the Macedonian Feeding Scheme, Breadline Africa was in attendance to support the community.
