ACSA's fuel supplies contaminated

The Airports Company South Africa is finding alternate aviation fuel supplies to replace about seven million litres of stored jet fuel that was contaminated.

ACSA said that all flights were operating normally.

"There are no issues," spokesman Solomon Makgale said.

Acsa was advised by the Fuel Consortium that contaminated "off-specification Jet A-1 fuel" had got into the line running between the National Petroleum Refiners of South Africa's refinery in Sasolburg and the airport.

As a result OR Tambo had fuel supplies for 1,6 days rather than the usual four-day stockpile.

It appeared the contamination was detected before the fuel got into any aircraft. Suppliers would look into how it happened.

The airport normally receives about three million litres of fuel a day through the dedicated pipeline from the refinery to refuel the aircraft that carry almost 17m domestic and international passengers each year.
