The World Orchestra partners the KZNPO

The KZN Philharmonic will kick off its summer 2013
World Symphony Series in true global fashion doing a joint performance with the talented young musicians of the World Orchestra led by maestro Josep Vincent.

We will hear works from South Africa and around the world in the first half, followed by excerpts from Sergei Prokofiev's masterful ballet "Romeo and Juliet". The World Orchestra traces its roots to the aftermath of World War II when Igor Markievich, inspired by the legacy of Sir Robert Mayer's concerts for youth, began to organise international youth orchestras to inspire peace and hope for the future. True to its origins, the World Orchestra, under the leadership of maestro Josep Vincent, is made up of young musicians from all over the world and has been designated
as an Artist for Peace by UNESCO. They have won numerous awards and continue to inspire peace and global citizenship through the power of music. Along with our very own KZN Philharmonic, these talented young artists will treat audiences to a selection of music from right here in South Africa to many other countries around the world.

In the concert's second half we will hear music from the ballet "Romeo and Juliet" by Sergei Prokofiev. Inspired by Shakespeare's classic tale of star-crossed lovers, Prokofiev's music is every bit as dramatic, exciting and romantic. Highlights from the ballet score were selected by the composer and organised into a suite for orchestra.
