iTunes store opens in SA

Apple opened its online iTunes store in South Africa on Tuesday (4 December), giving local music fans access to a library of local and international songs and albums.

In a statement Apple said customers would be able to choose from over 20m songs available to purchase and download.

Announcing the shop's roll-out across Russia, Turkey, India and "52 additional countries" Apple indicated films were not yet available in South Africa.

South Africa, with a population of around 50m, is by far the continent's richest economy, despite crushing poverty in some urban and rural areas.

According to World Wide Worx an estimated one-in-ten South Africans will have access to the Internet by the end of the year.
