The volume of goods transported (payload) decreased by 3.1% in June compared with last year‚ data released on Monday (19 August) by Statistics South Africa showed.
The corresponding income increased by 6.6% over the same period.
Income from freight transportation increased by 12.5% in the second quarter compared with the same period last year. The main contributors to this increase were:
- Primary mining and quarrying products (13.7% and contributing 4.2 percentage points);
- Manufactured food‚ beverages and tobacco products (14.1% and contributing 2.0 percentage points);
- 'Other` freight (17.7% and contributing 1.8 percentage points);
- Agriculture and forestry primary products (14.3% and contributing 1.0 percentage point).
The number of passenger journeys increased by 3.5% in June compared with last year. The corresponding income increased by 9.0% over the period.
