Launch of wireless access solution for VoIP SME clients

Euphoria Telecom is launching a wireless access solution for VoIP providers seeking better quality than ADSL for their SME clients in the country's main centres. It will be available in Johannesburg during September 2012 for all VoIP service providers. In coming months, coverage will extend to Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth.

George Golding, MD of the cloud-based communications service and network access provider explains that while ADSL is cost-effective for SMEs, it is simply not reliable enough to carry voice traffic.

"Usually, over-contention, distance or poor exchange maintenance is to blame. Modern exchanges that are not over-subscribed are fine for VoIP, but you won't always know that a link is unsuitable, because it might behave well enough in data tasks that are not as dependent on real-time throughput at peak times during the day."

Meeting the need

To meet the need for an affordable alternative to ADSL, the company has been working with wireless access providers to provide a greatly improved service experience.

Techniques adopted include dedicated prioritised IPCs (IP Connect, a Telkom service that provides quality assurance), quality-of-service (QoS) measures that prioritise voice over all other data, and VPN tunnelling, which improves transmission quality and reduces the risk of interference problems from other wireless providers in the area.

The service will come with an automatic fail-over feature, if the wireless link goes down for any reason, such as lightning, it will establish a new link on the client's backup/data line automatically, until the wireless link is back up and running.
