A Night At The Movies – Sounds of Celebration V In Concert

Education Africa and Sydenham Shul are thrilled to present 'A Night at the Movies' with Sounds of Celebration V.

Movies allow us to imagine and dream and to experience another's perspective for a brief, suspended moment in time. We can be transported to myriad worlds, populated by an almost infinite cast of potential heroes and villains. Accompanying the stories we love to watch, are the soundtracks and songs, memorable for their ability to capture the essence of the story's soul. This music is an art form that goes into our ears and straight to the heart. In this year's much anticipated production, over 180 talented musicians and performers will bring the movies to life in a vivid rendering from motion pictures' most beloved and acclaimed music.

For five consecutive years, NGO Education Africa has collaborated with Sydenham Shul in a unique partnership that uses music as its medium to uplift and inspire. This valued enterprise raises money to establish Marimba hubs to a wide number of disadvantaged schools, providing teacher training and safe, creative spaces for learners. Between 2013 and 2017, the Sounds ofCelebration project opened 5 marimba hubs - at Ithute, in Alexandra, the Zama Montessori School, Daveyton, the Boys and Girls Club of Protea Glen and its newest hubs in Hammanskraal and the Boys and Girls Club at Bertrams.

Joan Lithgow, Education Africa's creative musical director has handpicked the talented youths who will perform some of movies' most popular and celebrated music. Audiences are certain to be transported to the wide African plains by Johnny Clegg's 'Spirit of the Great Heart'from 'Jock of the Bushveld' and compositions from 'Shaka Zulu' and Walt Disney's majestic 'The Lion King'. 'Star Wars' and 'Pink Panther' fans will immediately appreciate the movies' characteristic notes. The heart achingly beautiful refrain from 'Schindler's List' evokes Steven Spielberg's masterpiece. Intrigue, danger and espionage are conjured from the 'Casino Royale' and 'Mission Impossible' themes. Children's classics like Shrek and The Wizard of Oz are vibrantly brought to life through their respective musical suites.

Performers include international singing sensation Choni G, Opera singer Neville Smith, and the show's own long-standing patron and friend of Education Africa, the master of MCs,David Bloch singing 'Somewhere over the rainbow'.

Two matinees are presented free of charge and performed specifically for 2000 disadvantaged youth in the Gauteng area. These young learners will have the opportunity to hear talented peers perform in a world-class venue. An educational booklet, allied to the CAPS curriculum, has also been prepared and will be supplied to each child. The final performance, formally presented by David Bloch, takes place on Tuesday 27 February at 7.45pm and is open to the public. All performances take place at Emperors Palace, Theatre of Marcellus.
