Mandela improving, responding to treatment

Pretoria - Former President Nelson Mandela is responding well to treatment and has steadily improved, says President Jacob Zuma.

The former statesman was admitted to a Pretoria hospital on December 8 where doctors treated him for a recurring lung infection. He later underwent a procedure to have gallstones removed.

"I have been informed that at his age, doctors need to intervene in a very gradual and sensitive way, in order to maximise the chances of a full recovery. The medical team has our full confidence and he is receiving the best care possible.

"We are however mindful of the fact that Madiba is at an age where medical challenges require extra-ordinary care. But, as we all know, Comrade Madiba is an unparalleled fighter and has always been so. He has met all his health challenges with his tremendous fortitude and grace," he said.

Zuma thanked the nation for continuous support to Madiba and his family and wished him a speedy recovery.
