Oxford and Cambridge Paddle for ReadingSpectators are invited to bring friends and family to the V&A Waterfront marina for the second annual Oxford-Cambridge Paddle to Read dragon boat race. The morning will be packed with friendly yet fierce competition as the two university publishing houses compete to raise funds for reading on Saturday, 24 November 2012 from 9am. The day kicks off with a school vs school race, which will see promising school-going paddlers from two Western Cape schools break water in a school vs school race. A fun charity race will then see key educational stakeholders and sporting personalities - including 2012 Olympic gold medallist Matthew Brittain (SA Men's Lightweight Four Rowing team) and 2012 Olympic Women's rower Lee-Ann Persse - take their places in the two dragon boats in their bid to "Paddle for Reading". The starting point is at the Two Oceans Aquarium and the race will finish off at the Cape Grace Hotel. A reading and activity corner will also be available on the day to keep the kids entertained. All proceeds generated will be used to purchase reading books for The Shine Centre's language and literacy programmes. The Shine Centre is a non-profit organisation that provides support in literacy and language enrichment to children in Grades 2 and 3.
