Port deal with Maputo signed

South Africa and Mozambique have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) which will result in Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) collaborating with the Maputo Ports Development Company (MPDC). The MoU was signed on Monday (3 June).

"The MoU opens up collaboration on matters of common interest in areas of infrastructure development, engineering, training and marine services," TNPA's chief executive Tau Morwe said.

Morwe said the countries were not competitors and the agreement would create a closer working relationship with MPDC.

Osorio Lucas, chief executive of MPDC said the agreement is an important step toward fostering greater intra-regional co-operation, which is a key priority of the Southern African Development Community and the Common Market of Eastern and Southern Africa.

Morwe hoped intra-regional trade would reach the same level as that in Asia and Europe.
