Lekota's plan may be illegal
Party president Mosiuoa Lekota seemed to suggest that responsible motorists should use their cellphones to give input on dangerous and reckless driving.
He said both the ANC and the DA were overlooking the most obvious solution: "Use responsible motorists to know what irresponsible motorists are doing moment by moment."
"All that is needed," Lekota said, "is a number to call to alert traffic authorities."
Road signs should provide contact details.
That using a phone while at the wheel of a car is against the law - and that it is the cause of many vehicle accidents - did not feature in Lekota's statement.
His suggestion to the transport minister to consider implementing measures to involve motorists in making roads safer for everyone has apparently gone unheeded.
Lekota also said climate change made it urgent that rail transport should once again come into its own.
He urged the government to allow 51% of the country's rail transport to be acquired by the private sector.
