A five-year, $50m Global Environment Facility (GEF)-funded programme rolled out by FAO and its partners have made progress in protecting international waters' biodiversity possible; of which eighteen new areas protecting vulnerable marine ecosystems, including sea turtles and tuna, has been established, making these waters less harmful.
