Bumblebees in crisis: Insect's inner lives reveal what the world would lose if they disappear

I study insects for a living, and bumblebees are by far my favourite. They're the most charismatic and friendly critters you're likely to see out and about.
Sadly, your chances of seeing a bumblebee in Europe and North America have dropped by a third since 1970, according to new research.

Roadmap developed to conserve global insect populations

Seventy-three scientists from around the world, led by Prof Jeff Harvey from the Netherlands Institute for Ecology, has come up with a roadmap for global insect conservation and recovery. The roadmap, which calls for action in the short-, medium- and long-term, was published recently in Nature Ecology & Evolution.

LE South Africa introduces oil-spill-eating enzyme technology

Oil spills can be deadly, killing microscopic organisms, thus damaging entire food chains and causing severe environmental damage. To combat oil spills, Oil Spill Eater II (OSE II) was developed in 1989 in the USA and has been used to clean up more than 44 000 spills since. Approved by the US Environmental Protection Agency (and featured on the National Contingency Plan List) and the UK Marine Management Organisation, OSE II is now available in South Africa through Lubrication Engineers (LE) SA.

Food systems development needs a new trajectory - FAO director-general

Noting that food systems are huge economic, social and environmental drivers of transformational change, FAO director-general Qu Dongyu believes turning them into accelerators of progress on the SDGs is essential to achieving several core objectives of the 2030 Agenda. These include ending extreme poverty, addressing hunger an all forms of malnutrition, protecting and restoring the world's biodiversity and natural resources, and combatting and building resilience to climate change.

Bees: How important are they and what would happen if they went extinct

How important are bees and what will happen when they go extinct? Is there research into what is killing them? I've been told it's weed killers... - Tink, aged 18, Cornwall, UK.
Bees - including honey bees, bumble bees and solitary bees - are very important because they pollinate food crops. Pollination is where insects move pollen from one plant to another, fertilising the plants so that they can produce fruit, vegetables, seeds and so on. If all the bees went extinct, it would destroy the delicate balance of the Earth's ecosystem and affect global food supplies.

Investing in the future of food and agriculture - farm better, not bigger

It is no secret that food security, health and sustainability are concerns around the world. The knock-on effect to this is the need to address hunger, lifestyle diseases and climate change. One of the primary considerations of this discussion is centred around changing how agriculture and farming are being done.

Three ways cities can help feed the world, without costing the Earth

Climate change is underway, and human activities such as urbanisation, industrialisation and food production are key contributors. Food production alone accounts for around 25% of global carbon emissions. Ironically, the changing weather patterns and more frequent extreme weather events resulting from climate change also put the world's food supplies at risk.
