FAO, GEF team up to make forest data more transparent, accessible and available

Efficient monitoring of and reporting on forests and land-use change is essential for tracking progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as countries adopt climate change-mitigation and adaptation measures. As such, FAO has launched a $7.1m project supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to make forest data more accessible, transparent and available, and, in particular, help developing countries to meet the Paris Climate Agreement's enhanced transparency requirements.

What Cameroon can teach others about managing community forests

A quarter of a century ago, Cameroon passed a law which gave people living on the edge of forests the right to own and manage forest areas. These communities depended on the forest for livelihood activities, like agriculture, hunting, fishing and non-timber forest products - like fruits or medicinal plants.

Palm oil boycott could actually increase deforestation - sustainable products are the solution

Palm oil can be found in food and cosmetics everywhere: in fact, half of the world's population uses palm oil in food. But public awareness about the loss of wildlife through deforestation caused by palm oil crops is growing, and there's mounting pressure on retailers to reduce their sales of palm oil products, or boycott them altogether.

Hidden danger: Why soil pollution should be a top priority globally

According to an FAO report, Soil Pollution: A Hidden Reality, little is know about the scale and severity of soil pollution, which poses a serious threat to agricultural productivity, food safety and human health. The report states that industrialisation, war, mining and the intensification of agriculture have all left a legacy of soil contamination across the planet, while the growth of cities has seen soil used as a sink for ever greater amounts of municipal waste.

Eco-farming can solve hunger, climate crises, experts say

Asian farmers are growing rice and rearing fish in the same fields to increase their income and reduce weeds, while Ghanaians are using crop residues as compost to boost yields. Such eco-farming techniques could deliver nutritious, environmentally friendly food for a growing world, increase farmers' earnings and make farms more resilient to climate change, according to campaigners.

Empowering women can help drive sustainable forest use in Africa

According to the director and founder of the Cameroon-based NGO African Women's Network for Community Management of Forests (REFACOF), Cécile Ndjebet, millions of African women work in forestry, but many lack the rights of land tenure afforded to their male counterparts. The global forestry sector could play a powerful role in empowering rural women through land tenure.
