Bumblebees in crisis: Insect's inner lives reveal what the world would lose if they disappear

I study insects for a living, and bumblebees are by far my favourite. They're the most charismatic and friendly critters you're likely to see out and about.
Sadly, your chances of seeing a bumblebee in Europe and North America have dropped by a third since 1970, according to new research.

Summit to explore scaling up innovation in agriculture

The fourth Agri-Food Tech & Innovation Summit (AFTI EA 2020), hosted by the Africa Agri Council (AAC) is set to explore the upsurge in new thinking and the game-changing developments in agricultural practices and technology, and what is needed to scale these innovations to reach smallholder farmers and agribusinesses. "We have the technology and the innovations to make a difference, yet these innovations aren't reaching the smallholder farmers who need them most - they lack access to the right information at the right time," says Ben Leyka, AAC MD.

Fishery project makes progress in protecting biodiversity of international waters

A five-year, $50m Global Environment Facility (GEF)-funded programme rolled out by FAO and its partners have made progress in protecting international waters' biodiversity possible; of which eighteen new areas protecting vulnerable marine ecosystems, including sea turtles and tuna, has been established, making these waters less harmful. "Keeping international waters healthy and preserving their rich biodiversity has long been a challenge for marine areas that do not fall under the responsibility of any one country," says Maria Helena Semedo, FAO's deputy director-general, climate and natural resources.

Ethiopia is making maps to help improve soil health

Healthy soils are vital to human survival. They play a pivotal role in feeding global populations - after all, food is grown in soil. Healthy soils grow more crops and allow for nutrients to be better absorbed by the crops. That's why it's important to understand exactly when there might be a problem with the soil of a particular area, and what's causing it. Without a precise diagnosis, soil can't be successfully treated.

FAO, GEF team up to make forest data more transparent, accessible and available

Efficient monitoring of and reporting on forests and land-use change is essential for tracking progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as countries adopt climate change-mitigation and adaptation measures. As such, FAO has launched a $7.1m project supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to make forest data more accessible, transparent and available, and, in particular, help developing countries to meet the Paris Climate Agreement's enhanced transparency requirements.

Oil spills can be deadly, killing microscopic organisms, thus damaging entire food chains and causing severe environmental damage. To combat oil spills, Oil Spill Eater II (OSE II) was developed in 1989 in the USA and has been used to clean up more than 44 000 spills since. Approved by the US Environmental Protection Agency (and featured on the National Contingency Plan List) and the UK Marine Management Organisation, OSE II is now available in South Africa through Lubrication Engineers (LE) SA.
