Buildings left standing in Turkey offer design guidance for future earthquake-resilient construction

The earthquakes in Turkey and Syria on 6 February 2023 damaged over 100,000 buildings, caused more than 10,000 collapses and killed more than 50,000 people. These earthquakes also put to the test advanced building technologies that can minimise damage and keep buildings functioning after a quake.

Building on new risks: construction in the age of greening

In June 2022, a fire outbreak at a hospital construction site in Istanbul, Turkey, destroyed most of the newly installed medical and security devices, and injured three people. A few days later, firefighters from West Fargo in North Dakota attended a flaming construction site behind the town's Costco. And a month after that, a blaze broke out at a railway development in Stuttgart, Germany.

5 ways drones will change the way buildings are designed

Drones are already shaping the face of our cities - used for building planning, heritage, construction and safety enhancement. But, as studies by the UK's Department of Transport have found, swathes of the public have a limited understanding of how drones might be practically applied.

Future cities could be 3D printed - using concrete made with recycled glass

3D printed concrete may lead to a shift in architecture and construction. Because it can be used to produce new shapes and forms that current technologies struggle with, it may change the centuries-old processes and procedures that are still used to construct buildings, resulting in lower costs and saved time.

Cities and climate change: why low-rise buildings are the future - not skyscrapers

More than half of the world's 7.8 billion people live in cities and urban areas. By 2050, an additional 2.5 billion will be living there. As that figure continues to climb and ever more people flock to metropolitan areas in the hope of a better life, the big question is: how do we fit everyone in?

Unbuilding cities as high-rises reach their use-by date

We are entering a new world where skyscrapers and other huge buildings are becoming redundant and need significant overhaul or replacement. The process is called unbuilding or, if you're a bit highfalutin, deconstruction.

Expanded engagement for Caterpillar: Boosting sales and alleviating poverty

WASHINGTON, US - A strong signal of growing business engagement with Africa by large US corporations was the announcement last September by Caterpillar CEO Doug Oberhelman of plans to invest over $1b in Africa over the next five years. Caterpillar is not a new-comer, having begun doing business on the continent in 1926. At last month's US-Africa Business Summit in Washington, DC, David Picard, Caterpillar's regional manager for Africa and the Middle East, described some of the steps that have been taken since last year's announcement. He also talked about the challenges and opportunities he sees, including Nigeria, where the company has operated since 1948. He was interviewed by AllAfrica's Noluthando Crockett-Ntonga and Ladi Olorunyomi from Premium Times in Nigeria. The interview has been edited for clarity and length.
