AI could do for SMMEs what the internet never did

In The World Is Flat, Thomas Friedman argued that the internet reshaped competitive dynamics by enabling smaller firms to access markets once dominated by large corporations. AI may now drive the next shift, not only by extending market reach but by expanding what firms are capable of doing.

Every Youth Day, South Africa repeats the same message: young people must become entrepreneurs. It is not wrong, but it has become an easy slogan, increasingly detached from the realities young people face and the conditions they actually need to build businesses that survive.

Absa is opening pathways to economic activity through entrepreneurship education

National unemployment rates remain a chronic threat to South Africa’s economy. While overall unemployment continues to rise, topping 32.7% in the first quarter of 2026, clear solutions to economic inclusion for the country’s workforce remain elusive. Finding ways to integrate working-age youth, some 60.9% of whom are unemployed, into the workforce is a challenge that must be overcome for the sake of social and political stability, as well as the foundation for a stable economic future.

Why women- and youth-owned businesses need targeted support

Women and youth now drive a growing share of South Africa’s small and medium enterprise (SME) funding demand, making up 36.1% and 50.6% of applicants respectively according to a 2025 FinFind South Africa MSME Access to Finance Report. Unfortunately, the report also indicates that targeted financing solutions for these two groupings declined during the same period. Between 2018 and 2025, female-targeted funding actually decreased by 33%, while youth-targeted finance dropped by 15.4%.

Corporate SA holds the key to SMME growth

South Africans have long shown strong entrepreneurial resilience. From spaza shops to local pap and vleis businesses, small enterprises have supported families and communities for generations despite economic barriers, limited access to support, fragmented trading networks and constrained resources. That same spirit of determination continues to drive many SMMEs today.

South Africa’s youth unemployment crisis continues to deepen as reflected in Stats SA’s latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS).
Bridgement is solving the funding rejection problem for South Africa’s SMEs

South Africa’s SME funding environment isn’t designed to meet the needs of the SME. These small to medium enterprises are contributing 40% of GDP and employing 60% of the country's workforce but face a R350bn funding gap because the funding models used to assess them were built for a different kind of business entirely. Many successful SMEs with proven track records are being rejected for funding that they need to expand their businesses or invest in critical infrastructure, creating a gap between the perception of success and access to credit.
