Thyspunt recommended for Eskom’s new nuclear power station

A draft environmental scoping report has recommended Thyspunt, between Oyster Bay and Cape St Francis, as the preferred site for Eskom’s proposed 5,200MW nuclear plant.

Thyspunt is already owned by Eskom and has better access to the power grid than rival site Bantamsklip, partly because wind farms have already brought new powerlines to the area.

However, in January 2025 the SA Heritage Resources Agency provisionally declared Thyspunt a Grade I Cultural Landscape – a protection that may stay in place until at least February 2027.

According to the Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, Africa stands at the centre of the global energy transition at a time when the global order faces evolution and recalibration. The minister was speaking at the 2026 Africa Energy Indaba, which kicked off at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

While President Cyril Ramaphosa declared loadshedding a thing of the past in his State of the Nation Address (Sona), the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) approved Eskom's larger electricity rate increases for the next two years. A signal that South Africa may no longer have power cuts, but they still have to grapple with rising power prices.

Government fossil fuel subsidies triple under Ramaphosa

The new Climate Change Commission announced in January does not include climate change or biodiversity scientists or health experts, but former executive director Crispian Olver says its mandate is to serve labour, business, government and community constituencies rather than being an expert panel.

Government subsidies to fossil fuels have tripled in real terms since Ramaphosa became president in 2018, reaching almost R200-billion last year, mostly from Eskom bailouts and carbon tax exemptions.

Subsidies for renewables amounted to less than 5% of fossil fuel subsidies in 2024.

But investment in green energy across Africa is now about the same as fossil fuels.

Eskom is studying the high court judgment brought by Sibanye Stillwater and others, setting aside the power utility’s refusal of Sibanye’s wayleave application to develop a 50MW behind-the-meter Photovoltaic (PV) power plant to supply electricity to Sibanye’s Kloof Mine.

In 2025, South African mining production could only manage a marginal increase of 0.1%. While traditional revenue anchors such as platinum group metals (PGMs), gold, and coal contributed to the drop, bulk commodities and metallic minerals emerged as the heroes driving growth.

We are entering a new industrial era. Like the Renaissance, the Industrial Revolution and the Digital Revolution before it, the clean energy transition is reshaping how societies grow, trade and build prosperity. This time, however, the foundations of that transformation are not steam or silicon, but metals and minerals.
