Lab-grown meat techniques aren't new but bringing them up to scale will require further development

You might be old enough to remember the famous "Where's the Beef?" Wendy's commercials. This question may be asked in a different context since US regulators approved the sale of lab-grown chicken meat made from cultivated cells in June 2023.

How science and innovation can strengthen global food systems

Food systems, from production to consumption, are complex in nature and require coordinated efforts at different levels. Food systems are the public policy decisions, the national and global supply chains and the public or private individuals and groups that influence what we eat.

Adjusting the intensity of farming can help address climate change

We have little chance of tackling climate change and reducing biodiversity loss without a redesign of the world's largest industry: agriculture and food.

New food technologies could release 80% of the world's farmland back to nature

Here's the basic problem for conservation at a global level: food production, biodiversity and carbon storage in ecosystems are competing for the same land. As humans demand more food, so more forests and other natural ecosystems are cleared, and farms intensify and become less hospitable to many wild animals and plants. Therefore global conservation, currently focused on the COP15 summit in Montreal, will fail unless it addresses the underlying issue of food production.

Farming and fertilisers: How ecological practices can make a difference

Agriculture involves a difficult balance between food production and environmental impact. For example, fertilisers can help to achieve good crop yields, but over-using them produces greenhouse gas emissions and pollution.

The conversion of forests to agricultural land is happening at a mind-boggling speed. Between 2015 and 2020, the rate of deforestation was estimated at around 10 million hectares every year.

East Africa agricultural entrepreneurs find fortune in insect feed

Livestock farmers in sub-Saharan Africa have grappled with an incessant price rise of animal feeds in recent years - caused by the scarcity and high cost of ingredients, namely, cereals, soybean, and fishmeal. The incorporation of human foods, such as fish and meat, within conventional animal feeds, has put a strain on their availability.

As a result, feeds constitute an estimated 70% of input costs in poultry and fish production. This, at a time when the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations estimates that the world will have to produce 200 million tonnes more meat by 2050 to feed a projected global population of 9.1 billion. The need for alternative, cost-effective, and environmentally-friendly animal feed protein sources, is clear.
