How electric vehicles are accelerating the end of the oil age

There is plenty of hand-wringing on display at the COP28 climate conference in Dubai about the slow pace of reducing the consumption of fossil fuels to fight climate change. But one positive that delegates can point to is the growing fleet of electric vehicles worldwide that is already making a surprisingly big dent in demand.

SAIC, Maxus EV partner to decarbonise urban logistics fleets

One of the world's top five electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers, Shanghai Automotive Industrial Corporation (SAIC), has recruited a South African dealer and distributor to market and sell its commercial EVs. Maxus Electric Vehicles (EV), the newly founded green mobility business, is one of the country's first distributors to focus solely on the EV industry.

Maxus EV will provide access to EVs to urban logistics fleets, allowing them to cut the total cost of ownership and make considerable progress towards their net-zero targets. Early customers in South Africa, including Woolworths and DSV, have already driven over 1 million km while saving over 220,000kg of harmful carbon emissions.

There aren't enough batteries to electrify all cars - focus on trucks and buses instead

We need to change our transportation system, and we need to do it quickly.

Road transportation is a major consumer of fossil fuels, contributing 16 per cent of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions, which warm up the Earth's atmosphere and cause changes to the climate. It also pollutes the air, threatening health and costing taxpayers billions of dollars annually.

Electric cars might not yet be green, but we should buy them anyway

Transforming the way we travel is an essential part of tackling the climate crisis. The transport sector contributes about 20% of global carbon emissions. In the UK the figure is 33%, and the country has made virtually no progress in reducing emissions from transport. In many countries, they're actually increasing.
