Overview
An opportunity for a committed and dedicated professional to be appointed to our Postgraduate Live Performance Studies lectureship (BA Hons in Live Performance) in 2024, with learning outcomes in development, entrepreneurship and innovation for TV, film and other entertainment products and platforms. The AFDA Honours degrees in Motion Picture Medium and Live Performance builds on the undergraduate degrees by intensifying the learning experience of Practice-Led Research/Research-Led Practice. The AFDA MFA Programme focusses on Motion Picture Medium.

The degrees are divided into three equally important components: Core Course, Research Development and Discipline. In the creative arts there is an accelerating recognition that creative practice is a form of research. For the purposes of these degrees, the idea that the practical component and research inform each other and go hand in hand is implemented by applying the ideas of Research-led-Practice / Practice-led-Research.

AFDA Postgrad is looking for a committed and dedicated lecturer with industry experience to lecture across Live Performance Discipline, Core Course and Research Development. The position requires someone with drive and initiative who can motivate students and guide them into the world of Acting with a focus on screen & associated media performance and applying Core Course to their practical outcomes. Experience in engaging students with both classical and contemporary texts on drama would be beneficial. Candidates also need to have a background in critical theory with special focus on questions of decolonization and intersectionality.  The successful candidate will teach Screen Acting/Drama within the Live Performance Stream in the Postgraduate Programme and have oversight responsibility for the Core Course. As such the candidate will develop lesson plans, teach, mark, coordinate other lecturers/lectures to be included in the Core Course/Live Performance screen acting/drama component. The successful candidate needs to demonstrate a willingness to embrace AFDA’s unique pedagogy which is the basis of the applied and integrated work simulated learning environment at AFDA.
Key Functions
The role can be summarised as follows:
  • Delivering the majority of lectures (contact) in the Core Course and lecture in the Discipline of Live Performance in Screen Acting/Drama within the Honours Degree Programme, with periodic lectures as requested within the Research Course.
  • Have an advanced understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of their discipline.
  • Have a thorough understanding of their discipline curriculum.
  • Conduct research to develop up-to-date lesson plans and lecture content for their discipline.
  • Deliver lectures according to timetabled sessions and do the required consultations.
  • Be knowledgeable in all contact and online pedagogical approaches as they apply to their discipline and practice them appropriately according to the designated requirements.
  • Have a thorough understanding of all assessment instruments and use them appropriately for all learning activities.
  • Manage their discipline students by ensuring that:

o   Students understand the term’s assignments, assessments, and associated assessment instruments and deadlines.

o   Students stay on track with the term’s deliverables through regular follow-ups where required.

o   All facilities and equipment for the term’s teaching and the term’s project are available, functional, and maintained.

o   The term’s resources are adequately planned for.

o   All assignments are marked, and all marks are submitted timeously to the Registry for moderation and report generation.


  • Devise termly timetables, assignments, course guides, lectures and associated assessment instruments in conjunction with their AFDA counterparts on other campuses.
  • Implement and review the above with the purpose of improvement.
  • Evaluate Students in Formative and Summative Assessments.
  • Be responsible for teaching and assessing course content per term.
  • Conduct student consultations and reflective meetings.
  • Prepare content and lesson plans for each term.
  • Assessment registration for the term’s assessments.
  • Manage daily running of the course, including venues & facilities  management.
  • Adhering to the requirements of management structures that ensure the delivery and quality of the programme.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance and Quality Enhancement practices.
  • Work with counterparts to ensure parity across all campuses on term outcomes.
  • Attendance registers and class management administration.
  • Research supervision for Honours Students.
  • Participate in all required marketing activities such as Open Days and consultations with prospective students where required.

Selection criteria
  • Minimum qualification: a relevant MA degree (Live Performance, Drama and or Drama/Studies) or currently enrolled in a Master’s Programme with a completion plan.
  • Experience in the tertiary education sector / Academia, Creative Writing, English or equivalent field).
  • Previous lecturing experience or experience in the industries an advantage
  • Track record of a minimum of 5 - 10 years in the television commercial, television series, feature film or documentary film industry.
  • Evidence of desire to teach.
