TheSouthAfrican.com is seeking a sports manager to lead its sports news writer team. The chosen candidate is passionate about sport, enjoys and has experience in writing content of his/her own, whilst managing and leading a news team to achieve key milestones and audience targets.

The sport manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of TheSouthAfrican.com’s sport news team. The sport manager will oversee the daily diaries and content plans associated with the sport agenda, whilst producing news stories of his/her own. The sports manager is responsible for meeting and maintaining agreed-upon audience growth and engagement targets on an individual basis, as well as that of the sports team.

Duties:

• Develop a sport strategy to achieve the agreed upon audience targets;
• Manage the Sport news team, their deliverables and be the conduit for day-to-day communications;
• Produce an agreed-upon number of news stories per day;
• Oversee work schedules for the sport news team;
• Help with brainstorming and planning ideas for content;
• Assign breaking sports news stories when necessary;
• Manage push notifications;
• Lead the weekly sports meetings;
• Compile and maintain a sport forward diary;
• Work alongside the training, technical, and quality team, to ensure the sports team meets the highest editorial standards and best SEO practices.

Requirements:

• A degree or similar qualification in journalism and/or communications
• Seven to 10 years' online publishing experience, preferably in a management role at a reputable publisher
• Experience as a Sports News Writer
• Excellent writing and sub-editing skills
• Able to work independently and be an excellent communicator
• Must have a clear grasp of South African context, cultural nuances, and the unforgiving news agenda
• Proficient in content management systems, analytics tools
