NEWSWATCH: Subject to obtaining regulatory approval, WPP announced today, Thursday, 27 January 2011, that it has agreed to acquire a majority stake in Ogilvy South Africa. Former Ogilvy UK chairman and long-time friend Gary Leih paid an emotional tribute to the late Robyn Putter, calling him a "great champion" of the industry and showering him with praise for his "sterling contribution" to the industry's transformation.
It is with deep regret and much sadness that Ogilvy announces the passing away of Robyn Putter, former Ogilvy South Africa CEO and Ogilvy Worldwide board director, on Monday, 1 March 2010. Robyn had been bravely fighting cancer over the past year, and in usual Robyn fashion, his spirit was strong all the way through.

Despite the onset of a global recession the Ogilvy Africa network is not planning to downsize, says Ogilvy Africa MD, Ato Afful. Afful was speaking at a conference for leaders and creative heads from Ogilvy offices in Africa and the Indian Ocean islands, who gathered in South Africa to, among other things, deliberate on Africa's advertising and marketing challenges.

Ogilvy South Africa has concluded a transaction in which the company's black shareholding has increased from 26% to 50.1%. Black staff and management will hold 35.1% of total equity and 15% of total equity will be held by the Mamalu consortium, led by Moss Mashishi, who takes over as non-executive chairman of Ogilvy South Africa. 25% of the total equity (50% of the locally owned equity) will be held by black women.
Ogilvy head, Robyn Putter, has announced a number of new leadership appointments at Ogilvy South Africa to guide the advertising and communications group through "a new phase of growth and development" and to plan for when he will be "put out to pasture or turned into glue" towards the end of next year. While Putter remains executive chairman of Ogilvy SA and group head, the appointment of Nunu Ntshingila as CEO and Moss Mashishi as non executive chairman of Ogilvy Africa, is in line with the group's planning for the future.
One of South Africa's largest advertising agencies, Ogilvy & Mather Rightford, is to incorporate one of the country's most successful small agencies, HarrisonHuman.
