SA retail sales rise 10.4% in June

Stats SA reports that South Africa's retail trade sales increased by 10.4% year-on-year in June 2021.

The largest annual growth rates were recorded for: all 'other' retailers (34.5%); general dealers (13.1%); and retailers in food, beverages and tobacco products in specialised stores (8.2%).

The main contributors to this increase were: general dealers (contributing 6.1 percentage points); and all 'other' retailers (contributing 2.6 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted retail trade sales increased by 0.6% in June 2021 compared with May 2021. This followed month-on-month changes of 2.3% in May 2021 and -0.5% in April 2021. In the second quarter of 2021, seasonally adjusted retail trade sales increased by 0.7% compared with the first quarter of 2021.

Retail trade sales increased by 30.7% in the second quarter of 2021 compared with the second quarter of 2020. The main contributors to this increase were: retailers in textiles, clothing, footwear and leather goods (56.9% and contributing 8.9 percentage points); all 'other' retailers (115.1% and contributing 6.7 percentage points); and general dealers (10.2% and contributing 5.3 percentage points).
