Air Zimbabwe suspends flights

Air Zimbabwe has been placed under judicial management and City Press says that it appears likely the airline will be declared bankrupt as it struggles with debts of US$140m and also owes its workers US$35m.

Air Zimbabwe's international flights to London and South Africa have been suspended, allowing South African Airways to be the dominant carrier for the country.

However, City Press says that four years after applying for a licence to fly to the country, Emirates has finally been granted its licence and launched its maiden flight to that country last week.

According to City Press, a Zimbabwe parliamentary portfolio committee set up last year found that Zimbabwean politicians and senior government officials chose to fly with SAA or with South African Airlink, shunning their own carrier.

Emirates could pave the way for other international airlines including Lufthansa, Qantas, Swissair, Air France and TAP Air Portugal flying into Harare.
