Remembrance of things past

After its successful performances at the Suidoosterfees and University of Stellenbosch's Wordfees earlier this year, Cheaper than Roses comes to Cape Town's Baxter Theatre for a limited season.
Remembrance of things past

Set in 1996, this touching play tells the story of a coloured woman who chose to be reclassified as white during apartheid. As she returns home for her father's funeral, reflecting on her decision to give up one life in exchange for another, the script explores the challenge of defining one's identity in the New South Africa.

National Arts Festival director Ismail Mahomed wrote the one-hander specifically for actress Lizz Meiring 20 years ago. And even though work commitments on both sides prevented the play from being staged until now, Meiring's captivating and sensitive performance was definitely worth the wait.

Cheaper than Roses (PG-13) is at Cape Town's Baxter Theatre until 3 May. Book at Computicket.
