Joel Stern appointed visiting professor at UCT Graduate School of Business

Financial economics guru, Joel Stern, has been appointed as a visiting professor at the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business.

In a major coup for the School, Stern will run electives on the MBA and will teach on the Executive MBA. He will also conduct at least one executive short course.

Stern is a recognised authority on financial economics, corporate performance measurement, corporate valuation and incentive compensation and is a pioneer and leading advocate of the concept of shareholder value.

Former president of Chase Financial Policy (the financial advisory arm of the Chase Manhattan Bank) and managing partner of Stern Stewart since the founding of the firm in 1982, Professor Stern will forego his fees, including those from the executive short course, for the establishment of MBA scholarships for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. The scholarships will be named after Marinus Daling, the late Chairman of Sanlam, for whom Stern had an especially high regard.

Besides a very demanding corporate life, Stern has maintained close relations with both the academic world and with the media.

In an academic capacity he has served on the faculties of graduate business schools in America and abroad. Stern is also part of the Executive Advisory Committee of the William E Simon Graduate School of Business at the University of Rochester and is a member of the University of Chicago's Council on the Graduate School of Business. Here in South Africa, he has served as adjunct professor at Wits University for 12 years and previously at UCT for four years.

His involvements with the media include being the financial policy columnist for the Sunday Times, London and The Financial Times. He has written for the Wall Street Journal editorial page, the New York Times Sunday Forum, Fortune, Directors and Boards, Financial Executive and Corporate Finance.
