Media Law and Ethics

Understand the law and ethics in the media space.

Lawsuits against media are on the increase. Make sure you don't get a hefty fine by getting to grips with South African Media law.

This aspect of the course covers:
• The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa as it relates to freedom of expression and freedom of the media
• Defamation;
• Privacy;
• Contempt of Court;
• Sub-judice rule;
• PAIA and the Protection of State Information Bill;
• Statutory restrictions on reporting; and
• Social media and the law.

Media Ethics

No one likes to think of themselves as unethical, but without an understanding of the various considerations involved, journalists can unknowingly cause harm and result in press council complaints.

This aspect of the course covers:

• Why ethics are important;
• The four pillars of ethics: truth telling, independence, minimising harm and accountability;
• The new provisions of the Press Code and lessons to learn from recent rulings;
• Ethical decision making in practice;
• Dealing with sources, from anonymous to vulnerable; and
• Making amends when you get it wrong.
