Regional salary averages revealed for 2018
CareerJunction has released a review on the latest salary trends in South Africa, revealing salaries currently on offer in South Africa.
Findings are based on actual salary offerings posted between December 2017 and May 2018 on CareerJunction, one of SA’s leading online job boards, where over 16,000 jobs are posted monthly. The review focuses on the top 10 most sought-after sectors in South Africa and reveals regional pay gaps for many sectors across Gauteng, the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

Gauteng remains SA’s most favourable location to work as professionals earn above average salaries across most sectors. While most salaries in Gauteng aren’t significantly higher than the national average (up to 10% higher), some sectors reveal considerably higher numbers. These include the warehousing and logistics sector where workers earn up to 21% above average, followed by the admin, office & support sector where salaries are up to 13% above average.
The Western Cape seems to be second in line for earning potential in South Africa where professionals generally earn salaries slightly below average. In many cases, remuneration packages do not fall more than 10% below average with the exception of the finance sector where salaries are far below average (up to 23%). Earning potential in KwaZulu-Natal, on the other hand, is far below the national average for many sectors. This is particularly true for the marketing sector where salaries are between 35% and 37% below average, followed by the IT, finance and admin, office and support sectors where salaries are between 25% and 29% below average.
Professionals that saw an overall increase in salary offerings at intermediate and/or senior level from 2017 to 2018 include data capturers (+44%), call centre operators (+42%) and customer support agents (+26% to +33%). Salary increases have been particularly evident within the field of accounting, where salary offerings increased by 18% for intermediate cost and management accountants (+18%) as well as senior-level roles in the fields of accounts payable and receivable (+20%) and payroll and wages (+26%).
Best-paid sectors across the 10 analysed sectors, based on cost-to-company remuneration offerings, are the engineering, IT and financial sectors. The highest earners within these sectors include civil/structural engineers, environmental engineers, business analysts, technical and business architects, chartered accounts, risk managers and financial analysts where salaries range from R31,000 to R56,000 CTC for intermediate level professionals and R41,000 to R76,000 CTC for senior-level professionals. Finance and IT managers are also at the top of the chart with salaries ranging between R56,000 and R68,000 CTC per month for professionals at senior to senior management level. Skills of this sort are not easy to find on the South African job market and, as a result, companies are willing to pay higher salaries to professionals with these skill sets.
ICT skills remain among SA’s most sought-after skill sets, particularly software development.
