Springtime, allergies and colds: not to be sneezed at!

The late Robin Williams was quoted as saying, "Spring is nature's way of saying, 'Let's party!'" That being said, Spring is also the time when you're bound to overhear countless people saying, "Pass the tissues please!"
As our gorgeous planet is transformed into a sensory heaven of floral sights and smells, seasonal allergies wreak havoc among young and old, with sufferers frequently experiencing repetitive sneezing, itchy eyes and a permanently runny nose. This condition is also referred to as hay fever or allergic rhinitis.1

Why can’t I stop sneezing?
What causes seasonal allergies? Allergens. Allergens are substances to which people are allergic. Pollen allergy occurs when someone has a hypersensitivity reaction to pollens from grasses, trees, flowers or weeds.2

While each person may have different allergies, there are steps you can take to avoid getting hay fever. Try to identify the allergen. If you’re finding it difficult to pinpoint, talk to your doctor about doing an allergy antibody (IgE) test. Remove the offending plants, grasses or trees from your garden. Stay indoors until after noon, if possible, especially in pollen season or on windy days. Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes.2

Why taking Vitamin C makes sense
Not only does Vitamin C bolster immunity; it is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory and may prove useful in the treatment of allergies. 3

The confusion comes in because allergies may share a few similar symptoms with those of the cold or flu. Allergy patients do not usually have fever. They have a dry cough and clear nasal drainage, while an infectious cough is characterised by yellow or greenish nasal drainage. Allergy symptoms may last for a few weeks or month, rather than a few days.1
