The 2017 Gauteng SANSUI Summer Cup

Introducing the all-new Gauteng SANSUI Summer Cup - The People's Race

As the end of the year gallops towards us, all eyes turn to Johannesburg, where we celebrate the Gauteng SANSUI Summer Cup at the grand and historic Turffontein Racecourse. Saturday, 25 November, is a key moment on South Africa's horse racing calendar. The annual event is not only the province's oldest and largest race, but also the finale of a year of thrilling horse racing events.

The Gauteng SANSUI Summer Cup combines the finest in horse racing with a fun, family-oriented day out. While the focus is on the exhilarating horse races, the event is packed with entertainment for people from all walks of life.

The Gauteng SANSUI Summer Cup has always brought together Joburg's communities, who come to Turffontein to experience the excitement of horse racing. One of the country's biggest race days, boasting exemplary quality fields and large prize money, the R2-million race offers a day of electrifying entertainment, while making the sport accessible and fun for young and old alike.

The 2017 Gauteng SANSUI Summer Cup has been dubbed The People's Race, and this year, the race truly is in the hands of the people of Gauteng, as a carefully selected group of social pioneers have each been invited to create their own area at the races.

“By harnessing the power of the people, we have ensured a truly Gauteng race day - a race day that connects people, creates jobs, supports entrepreneurship and celebrates the multiculturalism of our beautiful Gauteng,” says Clyde Basel, Phumelela Racing and Events Executive.

One of the few horse races in the country that children can enjoy, the Gauteng SANSUI Summer Cup offers a fun and secure environment for kids and parents alike. From admiring the beautiful horses in the parade ring and on the track, to experiencing a mind-blowing carnival complete with mechanical rides, face painters, buskers and delicious food offerings, the day promises endless wonder for the little ones.

There's something for everyone at The People's Race, and visitors can look forward to a stunning display of fresh South African talent, from roving fashion shows to local bands, a large-scale field band and a wide variety of different hospitality areas, where you can enjoy good food, drinks and music, in a beautiful outdoor setting, right in the heart of the city.
